Burns Bog Gala
The Burns Bog Conservation Society is proud to announce that the annual Celebrating Women and the Spirit of the Cranes Gala has been changed to the Burns Bog Gala. This development has made the Gala more inclusive and for the first time recognizes both men and women who have contributed to the environmental movement. The 2010 event will be held at the stunning BCIT Aerospace campus in Richmond. The night will feature entertainment, a recognition ceremony, art exhibition, silent auction and an elegant dinner buffet.
If you know someone who exemplifies a community leader, eco-artist, green business professional, environmental educator or successful young environmentalist please nominate them by clicking here.
We are currently looking for artists, performers, sponsors, volunteers and donations for this event. If you are interested in this fantastic opportunity please call Eliza at 604-572-0373 or download the sponsorship package here.
The People Have Spoken: Down With Unsustainable Development!
The proposed commercial/industrial development at 10555 – 64 avenue at the 64th & Highway 91 interchange has raised a lot of concerns amongst concerned citizens and environmentalists alike. After the council meeting informing community members about the project to be erected in their neighbourhood, the Burns Bog Conservation Society sent out a survey to find out what these people thought. Only a select few support the development. The vast majority are strongly against it, concerned about the increase in traffic, loss of green space, and destruction of the bog it will inevitably cause. Here is what some Delta residents had to say:

Green Christmas
Burns Bog Conservation Society has partnered with Carbonsync in a new initiative for a greener Christmas. This year why not start early on your new year’s resolution to reduce your carbon footprint and get a sustainable Christmas tree? For only $110 you can have a beautifully potted living Christmas tree delivered right to your door! What’s even better? After the holiday, Carbonsync will pick it up and re-plant it, reducing waste and carbon output created by the traditional methods of cutting down trees for a one-time use. Feel good about your purchase this year knowing that you will be having a carbon-neutral Christmas, and further supporting the environment as a portion from every purchase is generously being donated to Society programs.
For more information or to secure your tree today visit www.carbonsync.ca or call 604-626-7668
Mobile Interpretive Centre
As the autumn season approaches so does the rain. If you have made your way over to Burns Bog this week you will have noticed that it is more like a lake than a park. As students from Killarney Secondary School
discovered on Monday, even knee high boots will not keep out the water along the paths and boardwalk of the Delta Nature Reserve. This situation brings up a dilemma for the Burns Bog Conservation Society’s education programs; how do we teach students about the bog in the winter months? We bring the bog to the students! The Society is in the process of developing a Mobile Interpretive Centre (MIC). The MIC is an interactive presentation that will travel around schools in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley
to educate students about Burns Bog and environmental conservation in general. The presentation will substitute a live tour of the bog and try to involve all the senses with photographs, sound bytes and touch boxes. The MIC will include an online component with resources and teacher’s guides available internationally. The MIC is currently in the development stage and we are looking for funders and partners on this project. The project will be ready for presentation in the spring of 2010. If you are interested in participating, please call 604-572-0373 or email info@burnsbog.org.
